The VxBlock 1000 is a converged infrastructure solution that integrates Dell storage and data protection into a turnkey converged system supporting all high-value, mission-critical workloads—from the core data center to the cloud. It helps users modernize and simplify their IT infrastructure at scale, so users can focus on innovation and gain more value from data.

The VxBlock replaces the former Vblock from VCE, acquired by EMC in 2014. The Vblock used a Cisco Nexus virtual switch, while VxBlock uses VMware's vSphere Distributed Switch.

We were looking for a solution that supports a hybrid cloud platform, so Dell EMC VxRail comes as a solution to achieve our requirements. It provides the support of integrating applications with existing infrastructure. As VxRail is an Hyperconverged Infrastructure solution that can deploy both in the cloud as well as on-premises. It comes as a single package, as it has networking, data centers, and hardware resources all in one place. So we can reduce the cost spending to buy different components.

As Dell EMC VxRail comes as pre-built, the deployment process is simple and easy. It is possible to scale out easily and will get support from the vendor instantly. As it is a Hyperconverged Infrastructure and it is also the integration of Dell EMC hardware and Vmware, the flexibility that VxRail provides is effective. An organization that is looking for all in one place like data management, network management, Integration, and backup software ecosystem can go for this product.

We were able to exponentially reduce the cost spending to buy different components.
As it has VMWare integration, possible to work on different operating systems.
Automation of IT operations helped the colleagues to work on different manual tasks.

We use VxRail to support our VMware Horizon VDI environment. This supports all users in all lines of business throughout the company. We replaced a much older traditional infrastructure and knew going in that we wanted HCI. Because we were going to use VMware Horizon, the decision to go with VxRail was a natural fit.

VxRail gives us a standard, predictable, unit of scale and purchase.
Infrastructure maintenance and upgrades are much easier than on a traditional infrastructure stack.
Performance tuning is much easier and more straightforward than on a traditional infrastructure stack

Initial installation services leave a lot to be desired. We struggled to get the first units in service. Subsequent units were very easy to install though...
Dell/EMC has an A/B maintenance cycle for updates. Make sure ALL of your units are on the same cycle. It is difficult (but not quite impossible) to get them changes after installation
I would like to see a sub $100k offering for branch offices.

VxRail is very well suited to large-scale homogeneous workloads, VDI being the prime example. Anywhere you have a large number of VMs that are doing the same thing, VxRail is a good fit. If you have workloads that are greatly varied, VxRail should not be your first choice.

VxRail has made our VDI deployment easy to scale and (more importantly), made scaling the environment easy to justify to management.
When comparing to other similar solutions, the tight integration with Vmware code releases made VxRail much more stable. We have had much less downtime from the VxRail infrastructure than in our traditional infrastructure stacks.

All of these solutions scored very close together in our testing. Nutanix actually was the highest scoring in ease-of-use, but the integration with Vmware and the pricepoint led us to choose VxRail.

VxRail is in use at the college for all types of workloads. It has handled MSSQL, IIS, Exchange, File Storage, and other workloads. The VxRail is used across the whole organization for all major/minor services and workloads. The VxRail was put into place to remove an aging traditional server/storage deployment. The issues resolved included latency, storage and compute capacity and expandability.

Stability, the platform has not had any major issues or minor issues since deployment.
Management, the VxRail platform has a single plane of glass for management.
Scaling, VxRail is easily scaled for more resources.

The software release cycle is slow compared to general release of software. Particularly with VMware based releases.

For general workloads the VxRail is a beast.  For our deployments, we did not see any scenarios where it was not appropriate.

At the time we had a deployment of SimpliVity which did not measure up.  We demo'd other products such as Hyperflex.  We appreciated the ease of use of the VxRail and the overall value.
